TV and media units in Woodcote

In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. We make TV and media units from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space for a soundbar and speakers and a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall.

Around Woodcote, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, which decides where TV and media units sit. Walls in houses of that age are typically straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Your questions about TV and media units in Woodcote

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Reedham (London) station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Woodcote?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

How do you hide the TV cables?

That’s the aim, and it’s planned from the start. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later without taking the unit apart. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.

Can you add sockets behind the TV?

That is a job for your electrician. Ideally it is done before fitting.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

Media equipment runs warm and needs airflow. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go. Once it is in, don’t block the gaps.

Is it time for TV and media units?

Some want the TV to sit better in a period room. Building it into the alcoves or around the chimney breast makes it part of the room.

Here’s what TV and media units can help with:

  • A TV that looks out of place in the room
  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go
  • Somewhere to keep games tidy
  • Standard units leaving gaps

If you live in a period home close to St Swithun's, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Cupboard doors keep equipment out of sight, with openings or gaps where air needs to move.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing trims the edges on site to follow the wall.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Some closed off-the-shelf cabinets have little ventilation. We plan ventilation for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, with open backs, gaps or vented doors. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

How fitting works for TV and media units

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. A quote in writing follows for the unit.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Starting with a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Built-in living-room furniture in Woodcote

In the area around Woodcote, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 37%) and the years since 2000 (about 25%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Woodcote is partly covered by the Upper Woodcote Village Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. A quarter or more of the homes in the streets around Woodcote (about 25%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Newer homes normally have plasterboard stud walls and open-plan rooms, often with no chimney breast, so TV and media units are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.

For a flat near Reedham (London) station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Dollypers Hill, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.
