Fitted wardrobes in Putney

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Putney

In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. A pair of alcove wardrobes keeps the chimney breast as a feature, and each one is scribed to walls that are rarely straight. We meet the picture rail and cornice neatly, or cut around them. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about dusty space on top of the wardrobe and space under the eaves going to waste.

Wide windows with a radiator below are common in homes from the 1950s and 1960s, which leaves the other walls for storage. Around Putney, many homes date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, so it’s a layout worth planning for. Furniture is kept clear of the radiator so the heat reaches the room.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the fitted wardrobe we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

Practical tips

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Let us know which walls face outside

Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe where the wardrobe sits on an outside wall. A little airflow helps keep damp at bay.

Close doors gently and do not let them swing into furniture. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.

Questions from Putney

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Putney?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

My home in Putney is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it is useful to be around at the end.

How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in Putney?

It’s easiest to tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?

Yes, as long as it is ventilated. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe, which helps avoid condensation.

Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

Door styles range from simple flat fronts to panelled ones. You choose a colour that matches or contrasts with the room.

Hanging rails

We place rails at the heights your clothes need: one high rail for long coats and dresses, two rails for shirts and jackets.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

Moving home often prompts it. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room, or won’t go up the stairs at all. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms

Close to Bishops Park? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

What to check before you book

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking near post-war estates can depend on residents’ bays and estate rules, so it’s useful to tell us at the design visit. Fitting day is the sections coming in, being joined and fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

How to get a quote

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Putney homes and fitted wardrobes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 32% of the housing in the streets around Putney, with about 28% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Putney include Church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Church of All Saints (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If you live on or close to a main road in Putney, let us know during the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

For a flat near Putney station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Fulham Palace, about 0.6 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Putney is about 2 miles east of Clapham Junction, within the London Borough of Wandsworth. From period terraces to newer flats in Putney, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Across Wandsworth, we cover Putney.

What fitted wardrobes cannot fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations

If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
