Flats, conversions and lettings

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

How we make TV and media units for Rainham

Cables are the part most people want to hide. We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with openings and removable panels so you can add or swap leads later. We make the routes, and your electrician handles any wiring. We make TV and media units from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about set-top boxes stacked on a stand and leads that show from every angle.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around Rainham, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, TV and media units can run the full length of one wall. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Your questions about TV and media units in Rainham

Do you cover homes near Rainham (Essex) station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Rainham?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It’s made in sections. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.

Is there room for a soundbar?

Speakers work best in open spaces rather than behind doors. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar. Bring the sizes to the design visit.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Should I send pictures?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

Where other trades come in

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Plastering or decorating around the unit
  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
  • Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Cable routes
  • Birch plywood

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

TV and media units in Rainham: local notes

About 47% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Rainham went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Rainham include Church of St Helen and St Giles (Grade I), under half a mile west, and Stable Block at Rainham Hall (Grade II*), under half a mile west. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 40% of households in the area around Rainham, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Close to Wildspace Conservation Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. Rainham Hall, about 0.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. For a family home near Rainham Village Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Rainham is within the London Borough of Havering, about 4 miles north of Romford. Homes in Rainham are part of the area we cover for TV and media units, as part of our work in every London borough. Our Havering coverage includes Rainham, along with the rest of the borough.

Practical tips

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished

Doors can settle a little once the unit is in use. Hinges can normally be adjusted to line them up again.

Do not let clutter build up against the unit’s vents when you add equipment.

From workshop to your room

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. We visit to plan the unit and check the way in. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
