Tips worth knowing

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Give the paint time to cure fully
  • Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
  • Think about how often the bed will be used
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance

Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. If you change the mattress later, check it against those limits.

Consider how often the bed will be used and by whom. That helps decide its size and the mechanism as well as the storage around it.

Wall beds in Rainham

A home office that doubles as a guest room is a common request. We can design a wall with a fold-down bed and a desk or shelving around it, without the bed taking over. We can allow for cables to the desk, though any new sockets are for your electrician. People typically come to us about a playroom that can sleep visitors and a bed that fills a little-used room; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, so fitted furniture can often run neatly to the ceiling. If yours is one of the interwar houses or semis that make up much of the housing around Rainham, high cupboards make a good home for suitcases and spare bedding. The skirting is scribed around rather than removed.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What we do not do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Making good the walls after other work
  • Getting consent under your lease
  • Electrical work for reading lights

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Fold-down bed mechanism

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You tell us about the room and who the bed is for.
  2. We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of.
  3. We send a written quote for the bed cabinet and storage, ready to check.
  4. We build and finish everything in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.

Preparing the room

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Flats, blocks and rented homes

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Birch plywood

Shelving around the bed needs to stay straight, and birch plywood helps.

Your questions about wall beds in Rainham

Can you make wall beds for a home in Rainham?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London, and Rainham is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Rainham?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

How much time does fitting need?

How long the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we cannot advise on, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

Bedroom storage in Rainham

In the streets around Rainham, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 47%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 22%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Rainham Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Rainham. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Havering is no exception. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning at the measuring visit.

Living in a block of flats near Rainham (Essex) station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. For an older house near Church of St Helen and St Giles, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice. Rainham Hall, about 0.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

Rainham is about 4 miles north of Romford, part of the London Borough of Havering. Wherever you are in Rainham, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture built in our workshop and fitting in your home. We list Rainham among 22 places we cover in Havering.
