TV and media units designed for your room

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

TV and media units in Shirley

The screen size comes first. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy. Viewing height matters too: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. If your home has a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall and boxes with no ventilation, TV and media units made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Around Shirley, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. That leaves room for TV and media units in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

How it is made

Spray-painted finish

Spraying coats edges and corners evenly. The colour is agreed before we start.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to meet walls that are not straight, closing the gaps.

Living-room storage in Shirley

In the neighbourhood around Shirley, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 49%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 17%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Croydon is no exception. If your street in Shirley is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay through the council may be needed. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Croydon included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Shirley is covered by it. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.

Living in a block of flats near Elmers End station? Then TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near St George The Martyr Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Shirley is in the London Borough of Croydon, about 3 miles north-west of Thornton Heath. From period terraces to newer flats in Shirley, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Shirley is one of the places in Croydon where we make TV and media units, and the borough has 32 places on our list.

We work across CR0, SE25 and CR9. Streets in the area include Poppy Lane, Homer Road and Craven Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for TV and media units. Shirley sits close to the A232. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Other places close to Shirley include Monks Orchard (1 mile north), Shirley Oaks (1 mile west), Addiscombe (1 mile west), Ashburton (1 mile north-west) and Woodside (1 mile north-west). We also make TV and media units in nearby places like Thornton Heath (3 miles north-west), Croydon (2 miles south-west), Coulsdon (6 miles south-west), Purley (4 miles south-west), Broad Green (2 miles west) and Upper Norwood (3 miles north-west).

Fitting day, step by step

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Before we arrive

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Shirley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Do you cover homes near Elmers End station?

Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. We design open backs, gaps or vents where it sits, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Keep the vents clear once it’s in use.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

We design the unit so cables run out of sight. Access panels make future changes easy without taking the unit apart. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.

Is it time for TV and media units?

Others are tired of furniture that does not fit. Bought units seldom suit an alcove, a slope or an uneven wall, and that’s where a bespoke unit helps.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • A cabinet that traps heat
  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
  • Bought furniture that does not suit the room
  • Somewhere to keep games tidy

Addington Palace, about 1.7 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.
