Monks Orchard TV and Media Units
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make TV and media units for homes in Monks Orchard, each designed at a visit to your home.
- Nowhere good for speakers
- Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
- Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard

Flats, leases and landlords
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.
TV and media units in Monks Orchard
A built-in TV unit gives the screen, the boxes, the speakers and the cables one planned home. The wall is planned as a whole, rather than a stand with wires trailing behind it. If you’re planning a TV unit in Monks Orchard, we start with a design visit to measure and talk through what you use. People normally come to us about a big screen that dominates the wall and somewhere to keep games tidy; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Monks Orchard, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. That leaves room for TV and media units in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the TV unit we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?
Bespoke furniture takes longer than buying from a shop: there is a design visit, a quote and making time. If you’re renting or moving soon, a standalone stand may suit you better. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.
We do not publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Questions we are often asked
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Monks Orchard?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can you make TV and media units for a home in Monks Orchard?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Monks Orchard is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
How do I get a quote?
It’s easiest to send us a few details through our contact form and let us know about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.
Do photos help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.
From workshop to your room
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.
- You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
- At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
- The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.
Preparing the room
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Arranging a design visit
Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Monks Orchard homes and TV and media units
About 42% of the homes in the area around Monks Orchard went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 18% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Croydon sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like during the design visit. Terraced houses are home to about 34% of households in the area around Monks Orchard, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, which suit TV and media units built to their exact widths.
If you live near Ashburton Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If your children go to Oasis Academy Shirley Park or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If your home is one of the older houses near St George The Martyr Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.
