Living-room carpentry in Woodside: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 44% of the housing in the area around Woodside, with about 26% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Woodside include Church of St Luke (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east, and Woodside Cottage (Grade II), under half a mile north. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Croydon included. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Woodside is covered by it. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.
For a family home near St Thomas Becket Catholic Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live near Ashburton Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.
Woodside is within the London Borough of Croydon, about 2 miles north-west of Thornton Heath. From period terraces to newer flats in Woodside, we measure the room as it is and design around it. Woodside is one of 32 places on our list for Croydon.
Postcode districts we cover here for TV and media units: CR0, SE25 and CR9. Whether you live on a street like Long Lane, Tudor Road and Coe Avenue or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for TV and media units. If you are just outside Woodside, we also cover Ashburton (1 mile south), Addiscombe (1 mile south), Shirley Oaks (1 mile south-east), Monks Orchard (1 mile south-east) and Shirley (1 mile south-east). Other parts of Croydon we cover include Thornton Heath (2 miles north-west), Croydon (2 miles south-west), Coulsdon (6 miles south-west), Purley (4 miles south-west), Broad Green (2 miles west) and Upper Norwood (2 miles north).
What’s near Woodside
We fit furniture in homes around The Beehive pub and Oasis Academy Shirley Park, among other places. The nearest railway station is Norwood Junction station, about 0.7 miles north-west. Nearby you’ll also find National Psychosis Unit (1.7 miles east) and Whitgift Centre (1.7 miles south-west).
TV and media units in Woodside
If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit. People typically come to us about boxes with no ventilation and a big screen that dominates the wall, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Ceiling heights across London vary a lot, from tall period rooms to compact modern ones. In Woodside, as anywhere, we measure the height as carefully as the width, since it sets how tall TV and media units can be. Sections are sized for the stairs and doors on the way in.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the TV unit we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

How fitting day works
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. Either way, the day is planned at the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Ask for a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

What TV and media units cannot fix
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Connecting and setting up your equipment
- Structural changes to the wall
- Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician

Questions from Woodside
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Woodside?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
I live near Norwood Junction station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?
The unit can be planned either way. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
How do I get started?
The first step is to drop us a line using the contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

Caring for painted furniture
These points come up often when people plan TV and media units. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
- Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
- Check where the seating will go
- Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
A soft, slightly damp cloth is all painted surfaces need. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays.
Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear.
Why people ask for TV and media units in Woodside
Upgrading to a bigger screen is a common trigger. The old stand no longer suits it, or the screen takes over the room. Shelves and cupboards around the screen make it sit better in the room.
Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:
- Leads that show from every angle
- A TV that looks out of place in the room
- Somewhere to keep games tidy
- Bought furniture that does not suit the room
The wider area includes historic houses such as Addington Palace, about 2.4 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.
What to check before you book
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- How parking will work on your street
When is bespoke worth it?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
