Fitted Wardrobes in South Kensington

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted wardrobes in South Kensington starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

About our fitted wardrobes in South Kensington

What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own, so coats and dresses have room and shirts do not waste height. It is useful to think about what you wear most before we meet. Typical reasons to get in touch are condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around South Kensington, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the measuring visit.

  1. You get in touch and let us know what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. A written quote follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

How to prepare

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Starting with a design visit

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, get in touch through our contact form.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

South Kensington homes and fitted wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around South Kensington were built before 1919 (about 71%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 9%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of South Kensington include Church of St Luke (Grade I), under half a mile east, and Chapel of St Luke (Grade II*), under half a mile east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 58% of households in the area around South Kensington live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If you live near Burton’s Court, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. If your home is one of the older houses near Chapel of St Luke, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Carlyle's House, about 0.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

South Kensington is about 1 mile north-west of Kensington, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, South Kensington included. We cover places right across Kensington and Chelsea, large and small.

We also cover Little Chelsea (1 mile south), Chelsea (1 mile east), Brompton (1 mile north-east), World's End (1 mile south) and Earl's Court (1 mile west). We also make fitted wardrobes in nearby places such as Notting Hill (2 miles north-west), Notting Dale (2 miles north-west), Kensal Town (3 miles north-west) and North Kensington (3 miles north-west).

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around your clothes from the start, and adjustable shelves keep some flexibility. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in South Kensington

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in South Kensington?

Yes. South Kensington is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Kensington and Chelsea and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live in a flat in South Kensington. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions. We measure the slope carefully at the measuring visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

How do I get a quote?

The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form and tell us about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in South Kensington

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Getting in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, fill in our short enquiry form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
