TV and media units in Grange Mills
TV and media units for homes in Grange Mills
Cables are the part most people want to hide. We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with openings and removable panels so you can add or swap leads later. The routes are ours, while any wiring is for your electrician. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a big screen that dominates the wall and boxes with no ventilation.
Picture rails, deep skirting boards and plaster cornices are part of the character of older houses, and TV and media units need to meet those lines neatly. Homes built before 1919 make up a large share of the housing around Grange Mills, so mouldings are something we expect to talk about at the design visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Practical tips
New paint needs time to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
- Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
- Note the size of each box and speaker
- Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
A soft, slightly damp cloth is all painted surfaces need. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the finish.
Label cables when you set things up.
Questions from Grange Mills
My home in Grange Mills is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
I live near Balham station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
Can you add sockets behind the TV?
That is a job for your electrician. It’s best done before the unit goes in.
Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?
We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. We give each box its own space and you can check the maker’s guidance on clearances.
Can the TV unit fit a bigger TV later?
If you’re likely to upgrade, we can leave room for it. It is useful to know the size you are thinking of.
What affects the price in Grange Mills
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The number of doors and drawers
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Before the design visit
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Boards, parts and paint
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed on site to meet walls that aren’t straight, so there’s no gap.
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers suit games, controllers and remotes. Fronts are painted to match the unit.
What we do not do
It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
- Removing a chimney breast or any structural work
- Repairing plaster or redecorating
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

How fitting day works
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made in our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- You send us a few details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use.
- At the design visit, we measure up and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
- We send a quote in writing for the unit.
- We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop.
- The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.
Preparing the room
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Living-room carpentry in Grange Mills: local notes
In the streets around Grange Mills, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 55%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List records 11 entries within half a mile of the centre of Grange Mills. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home in Grange Mills is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
For families living near Henry Cavendish Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. Living in a block of flats near Balham station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The Bedford Hotel, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.
