What happens on fitting day

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

Advice

TV and media units in Little Portugal

If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position. If the TV stands on the unit instead, the top is sized and positioned for it, with the cables kept out of sight. If you’re living with empty alcoves beside the TV and games, controllers and remotes everywhere, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Most homes around Little Portugal are purpose-built flats, so the route in is part of the plan. Each piece is built in sections that fit the stairs, the lift and the doorways, then joined and scribed in the room. A lease can require consent before you fix furniture to the walls, so it is worth checking first.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

How we price TV and media units

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking near your home
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Getting in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To get started, message us from the contact page. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Do you need TV and media units in Little Portugal?

In older living rooms, a TV can look out of place. Building it into the alcoves or around the chimney breast makes it part of the room, rather than the focus of it.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Space for a soundbar and speakers
  • Boxes and consoles on the floor

Choosing a carpenter

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

When you need someone else

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
  • Painting the walls and ceiling

TV and media units in Little Portugal: local notes

About 31% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Little Portugal went up before 1919, and about 27% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 165 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Little Portugal. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and TV and media units can be designed to work around them. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. That normally means a van in Little Portugal needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Buckingham Palace, about 2 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If you live in a period home close to St Stephen's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Your questions about TV and media units in Little Portugal

Is parking a problem for fitting in Little Portugal?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Wandsworth Road station?

Yes, homes across Lambeth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

It depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.
