TV and media units in South Bank: what you get

The screen size comes first. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you are likely to upgrade. Viewing height matters too: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about speakers muffled behind doors and leads that show from every angle.

Most households around South Bank live in purpose-built flats, whether in older mansion blocks or more recent blocks. A mansion block flat often keeps its chimney breast, alcoves and high ceilings, while a newer flat is more likely to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan room. TV and media units are designed for whichever you have.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you see the colour in the room’s own light. Joins and scribed edges are painted at the same time.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing trims the edges on site to follow the wall.

Is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in fixed sizes, so gaps are common. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling with shelves and cupboards around the screen. Whether the ceilings are tall or low, standard heights rarely match them, so storage is lost at the top. Fitted furniture runs to the ceiling.

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Built-in living-room furniture in South Bank

Homes built before 1919 make up about 36% of the housing in the neighbourhood around South Bank, with about 32% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 37 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of South Bank. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning, especially for larger pieces.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Royal Festival Hall, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near London Waterloo station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live near Jubilee Gardens, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured along with the room itself: TV and media units are made in sections sized for each of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure and discuss the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. You get a quote in writing covering the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it’s in and is easy to touch up later.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

How to get a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you get in touch.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the design visit.

FAQs: TV and media units in South Bank

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My home in South Bank is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

What if I buy a larger TV?

We can size the opening for the screen you might buy next. It is useful to know the size you’re thinking of.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The fitting depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The unit is made in our workshop first.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • The width and height of the space
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Before the design visit

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
