Totteridge Bespoke Kitchens

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on bespoke kitchens in Totteridge starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Making the most of a galley kitchen
  • Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets
  • A central island in a larger kitchen

We are carpenters, so we make and fit the cabinets, while other trades handle the services. Your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics, so the design allows for pipes, cables and connections. Typical reasons to get in touch are a kitchen island with room around it and cabinets built around the appliances you choose; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Totteridge, kitchens often have a back door to the garden and a window over the sink. Cabinets, a larder and a dresser can be made to suit the layout. Your chosen worktop, sink and appliances are fitted into the design.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Caring for painted furniture

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Tell us about parking at the design visit
  • List what needs a home in the kitchen
  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
  • Choose your appliances before the design is final

Hand-painted kitchens are easy to touch up. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that wipes clean. Keep a note of the paint colours.

It is useful to know which appliances you want early. We size the spaces around them, so late changes can be awkward.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Oakleigh Park station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having bespoke kitchens fitted in Totteridge?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you handle the gas and electrics for the kitchen?

No, those are jobs for other trades. Your plumber connects the sink and dishwasher, a Gas Safe engineer handles any gas, and your electrician does the wiring, and we fit the cabinets.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Let us know when you first get in touch.

How much time does fitting need?

Every kitchen is different. How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?

Ready-made units are made to fixed sizes, so most layouts end in a filler panel. Ours are made to fit the room from wall to wall. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall normally ends with a gap, which fitted furniture avoids. It can use the full height too.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Why us?

  • A design visit, then a written quote
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • A spray or hand-painted finish

Made-to-measure kitchens in Totteridge

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Totteridge were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 30%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 30%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Totteridge include The Priory (Grade II), less than half a mile south, and Totteridge House (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Around a third of the homes in the streets around Totteridge (about 30%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Interwar houses often started with a small kitchen that has since been extended or opened up, so the kitchen is designed for the room as it is now.

For a family home near The Totteridge Academy, a tall cupboard by the door can take school bags and coats as part of the kitchen. Close to Brook Farm Open Space? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Fitting day, step by step

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and describe the kitchen you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the kitchen and talk about colours and finish.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which suits kitchens and takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. The kitchen is fitted and scribed to the walls, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician; new paintwork needs gentle use while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?

People also want a kitchen that’s built to last and can be repainted, which suits a long-term home. Hand painting is simple to touch in or refresh over the years.

Bespoke kitchens can help with:

  • Cabinets that suit lean and sloping walls
  • A kitchen finished in your colours
  • Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
  • A kitchen island with room around it

If you live in a period home close to St Andrew's Church, cabinets will be scribed to walls and floors that are rarely true.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done

Flats, leases and landlords

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
