Materials and finishes
Shelves
Wide shelves need enough thickness or support so they stay straight.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits shelves for heavy speakers and amplifiers.
TV and media units in Mill Hill: what you get
Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes. If the TV stands on the unit instead, the top is sized and positioned for it. Most enquiries start with cables trailing across the wall and nowhere good for speakers; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
A house from between the wars usually has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, and the proportions of TV and media units are set to match. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Mill Hill, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Your questions about TV and media units in Mill Hill
Is parking a problem for fitting in Mill Hill?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Do you make TV and media units for homes in Mill Hill?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London, and Mill Hill is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?
The unit can be planned either way. For a wall-mounted TV, the layout works around the bracket position.
Do you move sockets for a TV unit?
Electrical work isn’t something we do. Your electrician handles sockets and wiring. We share the layout so the sockets line up with the design.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Can a TV unit hold speakers?
Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, and larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Bring the sizes to the design visit.
When you need someone else
It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
- Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
- Structural changes to the wall
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.
What goes into it
- Cable routes
- Spray-painted finish
- Ventilated cabinets
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
When is bespoke worth it?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

What happens on fitting day
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so any section going up there is sized for them. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.
- You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
- We visit to measure and discuss the design and how the unit should look in the room.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
- We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room.
How to prepare
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
Getting a quote
It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Advice
Mill Hill homes and TV and media units
About 43% of the homes in the area around Mill Hill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 21% before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Mill Hill is in the Mill Hill Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. Where a home in Mill Hill is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the measuring visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
If you live near Bittacy Hill Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If your children go to St Paul's CofE Primary School NW7 or a school nearby, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. If you live in a period home close to St Paul's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Pricing TV and media units in Mill Hill
The price for your room depends on:
- The overall size of the piece
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- How square the room is
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
Before the design visit
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Examples of the look you are after
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- The type of home and how the room is reached
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, use our contact form.
