TV and media units in West Ealing: what you get
Speakers need space to be heard properly. A soundbar usually sits just below the TV, and larger speakers can go on open shelves either side. Closing speakers in a cupboard muffles them, so we plan open spaces for them. People usually come to us about leads that show from every angle and a TV that looks out of place in the room; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around West Ealing, a large share of homes date from before 1919, which in London mostly means Victorian and Edwardian houses. Main rooms in houses like these normally have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, and those alcoves are the natural home for TV and media units. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Caring for painted furniture
The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:
- Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
- Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
- Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
- Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit
Doors can settle a little once the unit is in use. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line.
Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit.

How we price TV and media units
The price for your room depends on:
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The width and height of the space
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Helping us understand the room
To help us picture the room, please include:
- Examples of the look you’re after
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Flats, conversions and lettings
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
What it is made from
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed on site to meet walls that are not straight.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it’s good for shelves that carry equipment and speakers.
What happens on fitting day
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays during the design visit.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit, and where the sockets are now.
- We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go.

- The unit is made in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.
Before fitting day
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Keep pets in another room while we work

Related advice
Questions we’re often asked
Can you fit TV and media units to the uneven walls of an older house in West Ealing?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
How is the price worked out?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
What happens at the measuring visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
Can a TV unit hold speakers?
Speakers work best in open spaces rather than behind doors. A shelf under the TV suits a soundbar with open bays for bigger speakers. Bring the sizes to the design visit.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Living-room carpentry in West Ealing: local notes
In the neighbourhood around West Ealing, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 53%) and the years since 2000 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. We go through parking and access at the design visit.
Living in a block of flats near Hanwell station? Then TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near St Mary's Cathedral, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary, about 0.5 miles north-west of the centre of West Ealing, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
