What affects the cost of window seats

Several things affect the price:

  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking near your home
  • How square the room is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

What we need to know

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • How you want to use the space
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

About our window seats in West Ealing

Window seats work in bedrooms and children’s rooms as well as living rooms. With deep drawers or a lift-up lid, it becomes useful storage as well as a place to sit. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. In West Ealing, the design visit is where the details are settled. If you are living with a period room that needs furniture to suit it and a radiator under the window getting in the way, that is what window seats are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around West Ealing, under-stairs cupboards in older terraces often house the meters or the fuse board. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the design keeps them accessible. Bays and sash windows in period houses are natural spots for a window seat.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What happens on fitting day

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it helps to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
  2. At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat is not trapped.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the seat and the grille.
  4. We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Getting a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

What we don’t do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Painting the walls of the bay
  • Seat cushions, which you source separately
  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters

Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Radiator grilles
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish

How it is made

Doors and drawer fronts

Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. Panels can suit the shutters or doors in an older room. The gaps are kept even all along.

Lift-up lids

A lid can run the full width of the seat or be split into sections. Smaller lids are easier to open. We’ll discuss the options at the design visit.

Your questions about window seats in West Ealing

I live near Hanwell station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Ealing and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in West Ealing?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Should I send photos?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Ealing sets its own rules. If your road in West Ealing falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit.

Pitzhanger Manor, about 1.4 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. If your home is one of the older houses near St Mary's Cathedral, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. For families living near St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.
