West Hackney TV and Media Units
In West Hackney, we design TV and media units around the room you actually have. We design your TV unit at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.
- Somewhere to keep games tidy
- Wasted space around the screen
- A TV that looks out of place in the room

How we make TV and media units for West Hackney
The screen size comes first. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you are likely to upgrade, with room around it so it doesn’t look squeezed. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and a TV that looks out of place in the room.
Victorian and Edwardian houses were built with solid brick outside walls, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. Since a large share of the homes around West Hackney date from before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how TV and media units are fixed. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

What happens on fitting day
You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving the room tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it’s useful to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
- At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
- A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
- The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it is in and is easy to touch up later.
How to prepare
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance

Advice
What we don’t do
It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
- Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
- Structural changes to the wall
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What it is made from
- Hand-painted finish
- Cable routes
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Ventilated cabinets
- Spray-painted finish
Looking after your furniture
These points come up often when people plan TV and media units. They help whatever the room:
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
- Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
- Find out how much space each box needs around it
- Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
Dust collects around equipment and vents, so a quick clean now and then helps. Clear vents keep equipment cooler.
Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves, and no single shelf overloaded.

Your questions about TV and media units in West Hackney
I live in a flat in West Hackney. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in West Hackney?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?
The unit can be planned either way. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables, and if it stands on the unit we size the top for it.
How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?
We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, with open backs, gaps or openings. We give each box its own space and you can check the maker’s guidance on clearances.
Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?
That is a job for your electrician. It’s best done before the unit goes in.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.
What it is made from
Shelves
Speakers and books suit open shelves.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the unit is fitted. Small marks are simple to touch up.
Living-room carpentry in West Hackney: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around West Hackney were built before 1919 (about 49%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 17%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of West Hackney is in the Northwold and Cazenove Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Purpose-built flats are home to about 53% of households in the streets around West Hackney, according to Census 2021. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
For a family home near Benthal Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If your home is one of the older houses near St Michael and All Angels, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. Near listed buildings like Church of St Barnabas, about 0.5 miles south of the centre of West Hackney, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
