TV and Media Units in Hackney

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on TV and media units in Hackney starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • Boxes and consoles on the floor
  • Wasted space around the screen
  • A TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall

TV and media units in Hackney

How we make TV and media units for Hackney

Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. The wall is planned as a whole, rather than a stand with wires trailing behind it. For a living room in Hackney, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. If your home has wasted space around the screen and a TV that looks out of place in the room, TV and media units made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Most homes around Hackney are purpose-built flats, so the route in is part of the plan. Each piece is built in sections that fit the stairs, the lift and the doorways, and assembled and fitted in place. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

How it is made

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the unit and takes up an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF has no grain to show through, so a painted TV unit looks calm and even. We use the moisture-resistant grade.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured as well as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. We visit to plan the unit and check the way in.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Common questions about TV and media units

How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in Hackney?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. TV and media units are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Homerton station?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?

Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go, rather than sealing it in a cupboard. Once it is in, don’t block the gaps.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Can the TV unit fit a bigger TV later?

If you’re likely to upgrade, we can leave room for it. It is useful to know the size you’re thinking of.

Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?

That’s a job for your electrician. It’s best done before the unit goes in and we design the cable routes around the sockets.

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Plan open spaces for anything controlled by a remote
  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
  • List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
  • Tell us about parking and access at the measuring visit

Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them.

Do not let clutter build up against the unit’s vents when you add equipment.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The width and height of the space

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What to send when you get in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought media units are made in set widths, so gaps are common. Ours are scribed to the walls and can run up to the ceiling. Standard furniture sizes rarely suit the shape of a flat, leaving gaps or crowding a door or radiator. Built-in pieces are designed around them.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What you get with us

Living-room storage in Hackney

In the streets around Hackney, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 33%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Part of Hackney is in the Well Street Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. About 57% of households in the streets around Hackney live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For a family home near Berger Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St John of Jerusalem, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For a flat near Homerton station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
