TV and media units for your home in Hackney Marshes

About our TV and media units in Hackney Marshes

In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above leaving the TV in an alcove or on the breast. Any chimney vent is kept clear. If you are living with a big screen that dominates the wall and a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall, TV and media units made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

London homes run from Victorian terraces and interwar semis to mansion blocks and recent flats, and your home in Hackney Marshes could be any one of them. Because walls and floors change with the age of a house, the design of TV and media units starts at the design visit. Bowed walls call for scribing, and plasterboard for the right fixings.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Why bespoke in Hackney Marshes?

TVs keep getting bigger, and a stand chosen for today’s set may not suit the next. We can leave room for a larger screen. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, which may not suit what you need to store. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Why work with us in Hackney Marshes

  • Saturdays by arrangement
  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us

See how bespoke compares with ready-made or how to compare quotes.

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

How it’s made

Spray-painted finish

The unit arrives already finished. Treat it gently while the paint cures fully.

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the unit and hides a sloping floor. Its height can match the skirting board.

What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including pictures on nearby walls. We cover floors and doorways first. Sections are then carried in and assembled.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

What affects the price in Hackney Marshes

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The number of doors and drawers

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

What to send when you contact us

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Examples of the look you’re after

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, fill in our short enquiry form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Questions we’re often asked

I live in a flat in Hackney Marshes. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hackney Marshes?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?

The unit can be planned either way. For a wall-mounted TV, the layout works around the bracket position.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, message us from the contact page.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.
