TV and media units in Haggerston: what you get

TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you prefer. We fit across Hackney and the rest of London. We make TV and media units from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space for a soundbar and speakers and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste.

A large share of the homes around Haggerston date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes seldom have fitted storage in the living room. TV and media units can be planned around where the sockets and aerial points already are, with cable routes built in. Plasterboard on studs takes fitted furniture well, as long as the fixings suit it.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Doors and drawer fronts

Many remote controls need a clear view of the box, so we may leave those shelves open.

Open shelves suit speakers and things you want on show.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bespoke furniture takes longer than buying from a shop: there’s a design visit, a quote and making time. For a short stay, a standalone stand can make more sense. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections that fit. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Why us?

  • Saturdays by arrangement
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Fitted tight to walls that aren’t straight

Haggerston homes and TV and media units

Homes built since 2000 make up about 35% of the housing in the streets around Haggerston, with about 31% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List has 101 entries within half a mile of the centre of Haggerston. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and TV and media units can be designed to work around them. Around a third of the homes in the area around Haggerston (about 31%) were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Rooms from that era are often squarer, with fewer alcoves and sometimes no chimney breast, so TV and media units often run along a full wall, with fixings chosen for the wall.

Close to Haggerston Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. The wider area includes historic houses such as Sutton House, about 1.5 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Haggerston is about 1 mile south of Shoreditch, in the London Borough of Hackney. Design visits and fitting in Haggerston can be on a Saturday, by arrangement. Our Hackney coverage includes Haggerston and the places around it.

In N1, E2 and E8, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. You’ll find streets here like Hyde Road, Glebe Road and Ufton Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for TV and media units. Questions we’re often asked

I live in a flat in Haggerston. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. TV and media units are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Does a conservation area in or near Haggerston affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you.

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets
  • List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
  • Let us know about access early

Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, place equipment gently rather than sliding it.

Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear.

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Before fixing into a stud wall, we check for pipes and cables, and heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor. Any new sockets or plumbing are for your electrician or plumber.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. We visit to measure up, note where the sockets are and plan how the cables will run.
  3. A written quote follows for the unit.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Arranging a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, especially with rough measurements. To send them over, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Do you need TV and media units in Haggerston?

Games, controllers and remotes need a home. Cupboards and drawers in the unit keep them in one place.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • Clutter around the TV
  • Wasted space around the screen
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Space for a soundbar and speakers

For families living near Randal Cremer Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
