About our bespoke kitchens in West Hackney

An island can be a good addition where there’s space for one. There needs to be enough clear floor around it to open doors and move about, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. Where space is tight, a peninsula or a longer run may suit better. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about open shelves with cupboards below and a kitchen that fits an uneven room.

An older kitchen often has a sash window and a back door, which fix where things can go. Around West Hackney, where a large share of homes date from before 1919, the cabinets are planned around the windows and doors you have. The sink position is agreed with your plumber. You choose the worktop, sink and appliances.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Made-to-measure kitchens in West Hackney

Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the neighbourhood around West Hackney, with about 17% built between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of West Hackney include Church of St Barnabas (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south, and The Coach and Horses Public House (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. That typically means a van in West Hackney needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

For a flat near Rectory Road station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live in a period home close to St Michael and All Angels, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. For families living near Benthal Primary School, a drawer set aside for lunch boxes and water bottles keeps mornings calmer.

West Hackney is about 2 miles south of Shoreditch, part of the London Borough of Hackney. We can visit homes in West Hackney on weekdays, or on a Saturday by arrangement. We cover places right across Hackney, large and small.

Every home in N16, E5 and E8 is covered for bespoke kitchens, from the main roads to the quieter streets. Streets in the area include Muir Road, Burma Road and Piano Lane, and we cover homes on all of them for bespoke kitchens. West Hackney is near the A107; on busy main roads, unloading kitchens takes a little planning. Neighbouring places we cover for bespoke kitchens include Shacklewell (1 mile south), Stoke Newington (1 mile west), Clapton (1 mile east), Stamford Hill (1 mile north) and Upper Clapton (1 mile north-east). Other parts of Hackney we cover include Shoreditch (2 miles south), Hoxton (2 miles south), Hackney (2 miles south-east), Haggerston (2 miles south) and Hackney Marshes (2 miles east). As one of the bigger places in Hackney, West Hackney is covered for bespoke kitchens and everything else we make.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in West Hackney

Do you cover homes near Rectory Road station?

Yes, homes across Hackney and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

My home in West Hackney is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

What are your kitchens made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF for painted doors and panels, and birch plywood where strength matters. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours you choose.

How much does a bespoke kitchen cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, layout and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Do you do the plumbing and electrics?

No, that work is for other trades. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician, and we fit the cabinets.

What happens on fitting day

You will not need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the room.
  2. We visit to plan the layout and check how the cabinets will get into the room. Let us know about parking too, as a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized to come in through your doors.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish; plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.

Before fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Arranging a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

What we don’t do

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Electrics, sockets and lighting (your electrician)
  • Making good walls and ceilings
  • Any work on the gas supply

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Islands where space allows
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Larders and dressers
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?

Many off-the-shelf kitchens use chipboard carcasses with a printed or wrapped finish. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in colours you choose, finished to suit the room. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it cannot tip, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in West Hackney

  • Built around your room
  • Work across the whole of London
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Every quote follows a design visit

Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf or what a quote should include.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

What affects the price in West Hackney

To work out the quote, we look at:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

Some details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To get started, use our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.
