Looking after your furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
- Mention any radiator on the wall
- Let us know about parking and access during the design visit
- Note the sizes of your largest books and records
Take the books off before moving an adjustable shelf, and check the supports are fully seated.
Overloading is the main cause of sagging. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so at the measuring visit, so we can allow for it.
Built-in bookshelves in Woodside
Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. If you’re living with shelves packed two rows deep and a home library or study, built-in bookshelves made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Whether your home in Woodside is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around your room rather than a standard size. Period rooms bring sloping floors and mouldings; newer rooms bring stud walls and service boxing. We measure for whichever you have, and the pieces are made to suit.
You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How fitting day works
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift not just the room, so built-in bookshelves arrive in sections that fit through. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind, and whether you want cupboards below.
- We visit to measure the wall and go through the design. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
- We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall. A hand-painted finish is applied on site, if you chose one.
Preparing the room
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
Ask for a quote
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, use our contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- The width and height of the space
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.
Before the design visit
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- How you want to use the space
- Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Woodside homes and built-in bookshelves
Homes built before 1919 make up about 44% of the housing in the streets around Woodside, with about 26% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Woodside include Church of St Luke (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and Woodside Cottage (Grade II), less than half a mile north. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 44% of homes in the neighbourhood around Woodside were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Alcoves either side of a chimney breast and tall ceilings make older houses natural homes for built-in shelving.
Close to Ashburton Park? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. Addington Palace, about 2.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Questions from Woodside
Is Woodside in the area you cover for built-in bookshelves?
Yes, we work across Croydon, Woodside included, and across the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
I live near Norwood Junction station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not usually. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Should my shelves be fixed or adjustable?
They can be, and many people choose a mix. We usually keep some shelves fixed for strength.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Is it time for built-in bookshelves?
Children’s books, toys and games often need a home too. Low cupboards and open shelves can grow with them, with adjustable shelves for changing sizes.
We are often asked to help with:
- A home library or study
- Low shelves children can reach
- Space for art books and records
- Alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste
For a flat near Norwood Junction station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
