Loft storage for your home in Acton Vale
How we make loft storage for Acton Vale
Behind an eaves door, there’s often insulation and a need for ventilation. We design the storage so it doesn’t block airflow or crush insulation. If anything looks wrong behind the eaves, it’s worth asking whoever converted the loft. We look at this during the design visit in Acton Vale. If you’re living with needing storage in a loft office and clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
Outside walls in houses from before 1919 are typically solid brick, which can be cold, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. That matters around Acton Vale, where a large share of the homes are that old. Any damp is dealt with before storage goes in.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

What loft storage can’t fix
We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Building work to turn a loft into a room
- Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
- Anything that needs Building Regulations sign-off
If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Fitted storage in Acton Vale
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Acton Vale were built before 1919 (about 49%) and since 2000 (about 21%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Acton Vale include St Saviour's Church and Institute (Grade II), under half a mile north-east, and Victoria Junior School (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home in Acton Vale is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
For an older house near St Saviour's Centre for the Deaf, sloping ceilings in a loft room suit wardrobes cut to the angle. If you live in a flat close to Acton Central station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Common questions about loft storage
Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Acton Vale?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
My home in Acton Vale is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.
Can you build a wardrobe under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. Hanging goes where there is height, with shelves where it is low. It is cut to fit the ceiling and walls exactly.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways as well as the room, so each section is sized to get through.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
What prompts loft storage in Acton Vale
Loft rooms that double as offices or guest rooms need places for things. Built-in storage under the slopes keeps the room flexible.
We are often asked to help with:
- A loft room with too many jobs
- Wasted space behind the knee walls
- Nowhere to store bags and boxes
- A sloping ceiling with no room for a wardrobe
For families living near Wendell Park Primary School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
How fitting works for loft storage
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much storage you want in the loft, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

Advice
When is bespoke worth it?
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
