About our fitted wardrobes in Acton Vale

Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We plan for the people using it too, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. If your home has bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, and a large share of the homes around Acton Vale are that old. Fitted furniture sits on a plinth or adjustable feet set level, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. The scribe at the wall takes up any bow in the plaster.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Bedroom storage in Acton Vale

In the area around Acton Vale, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 49%) and the years since 2000 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Acton Vale, Historic England’s list includes St Saviour's Church and Institute (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east, and Victoria Junior School (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For a family home near Wendell Park Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. For an older house near St Saviour's Centre for the Deaf, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Advice

When is bespoke worth it?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. That’s a real advantage if you’re renting or moving soon. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors can be plain, panelled or shaped to suit the room. They’re painted to match or contrast with the walls.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even surface on large doors. It works on plain and panelled doors alike.

The problems fitted wardrobes solve

Moving home often prompts it. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Gaps above and around standalone wardrobes
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting

Close to Wormholt Park? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room

Questions from Acton Vale

Is parking a problem for fitting in Acton Vale?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

My house in Acton Vale is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

The space in front of the wardrobe normally decides it. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We will look at the room with you during the design visit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.

Where is the furniture made?

Everything is made in our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
