Window seats in Acton Vale

Window seats in Acton Vale: what you get

In many period houses, a bay window is the obvious place for a seat. Bays have angled sides, and their walls are seldom square or flat. Each side is measured and the seat is scribed to fit, so it sits neatly in the bay without gaps. It is the kind of space where a ready-made bench never quite fits. We make window seats from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about a radiator that makes the space hard to use and a room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat.

Older homes like many around Acton Vale have floors and ceilings that slope, and a large share of homes around Acton Vale are that old. Window seats are scribed to the walls and levelled on site so doors, lids and drawers run true. Picture rails, skirting and cornices are worked around rather than removed, and the paint colour is agreed with you.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Questions from Acton Vale

Does a conservation area in or near Acton Vale affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you make window seats for a home in Acton Vale?

Yes, we work across Ealing, Acton Vale included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details.

How long does it take to fit a window seat?

How long the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Which materials go into your window seats?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Next to a window, the moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Where other trades come in

It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
  • Electrical work around the seat
  • Repairs to sash windows, cills or shutters

Not sure whether your space suits window seats? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Lift-up lids or drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Radiator grilles
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Flats, conversions and lettings

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the window and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that are not straight, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the measuring visit.

  1. You send us a note about the window and the seat you’d like.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design, the storage and the finish.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish written in.
  4. The seat is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home, and a hand-painted finish is applied in the room.
  6. Fresh paint takes a while to cure, so go gently with the seat and lids at first.

Preparing the room

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Ask for a quote

To get a quote, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Advice

Acton Vale homes and window seats

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Acton Vale were built before 1919 (about 49%) and since 2000 (about 21%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Acton Vale, Historic England’s list includes St Saviour's Church and Institute (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east, and Victoria Junior School (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Acton Vale, as it does anywhere else in London. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Emery Walker's House, about 1.2 miles south. If your own home is a period one, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat. For a family home near Wendell Park Primary School, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Is it time for window seats?

Some people want a reading spot. A seat by the window, with books nearby, makes a natural reading corner. It’s often the most-used seat in the house.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Standard furniture leaving gaps in a bay
  • Wanting a quiet place to read
  • Wanting a seat without blocking the radiator
  • Toys spread across a bedroom floor

Close to Wormholt Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and window seats can give those things a place.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

What it costs

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Before the design visit

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Approximate measurements of the space

For a quote for window seats in Acton Vale, send us a few details through our contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea. We will arrange a design visit, then send a quote in writing.
