What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so let us know what’s near you during the design visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, cut to the angle of the stairs.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls.

How to prepare

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

How to get a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Under-stairs storage for homes in Bell Green

Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. At the tall end, a cupboard works well for coats, an ironing board or the vacuum. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. People typically come to us about a fuse board that’s hard to get to and a staircase with untidy space beneath it, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Wherever your home in Bell Green sits in London’s mix of housing, there is often a corner or recess not doing much. Fitted storage can make it useful, with drawers, shelves, hanging or a seat depending on the space. Walls could be brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard, so we check before choosing fixings.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What it’s made from

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well. It is a good choice for drawer boxes and carcasses that carry weight. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Hallways see wet coats, shoes and umbrellas, so a moisture-resistant grade makes sense. It gives the painted fronts a smooth base, and stays stable once it’s fitted.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

What it costs

There’s no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Before the design visit

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Approximate measurements of the space

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Questions from Bell Green

Do you make under-stairs storage for homes in Bell Green?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and Bell Green is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

I live in a flat in Bell Green. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Under-stairs cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Bell Green homes and under-stairs storage

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Bell Green were built before 1919 (about 35%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 28%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Bell Green, Historic England’s list includes Fire Station (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north-west, and Church of St George (Grade II), about 0.6 miles north. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. A van working in Bell Green will normally need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Kingswood House, about 2.1 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. For a flat near Lower Sydenham station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your children go to Haseltine Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
  • Think about how your household uses coats and shoes
  • Look for meters, a fuse board or pipes before we visit
  • Tell us about anything bulky that needs to fit

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the fronts clean. Avoid scourers and harsh chemicals, and dry the surface after wiping. Handles and the edges of drawers are touched most, so give them a wipe now and then.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. A loose handle is easy to tighten before it works its way out. If a drawer stops running smoothly, message us from the contact page and describe it.
