How we make fitted cupboards for Bell Green

Many landings have a spare corner or wall that could work harder. We can turn it into a linen cupboard, or storage for bedding and spare towels, with shelves set at the heights you choose. We plan it so doors open without catching the stairs or the banister. We make fitted cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a utility room with proper storage and boxing in a boiler with room for servicing.

Older rooms often suit panelled doors, newer rooms plainer ones. For a home in Bell Green, door styles are talked through during the design visit. You choose the colour, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Questions we are often asked

I live in a flat in Bell Green. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Bell Green?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, with doors that open wide for servicing. Any work on the boiler itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

What do fitted cupboards cost?

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Fitted storage in Bell Green

In the neighbourhood around Bell Green, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 35%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 28%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Bell Green, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Fire Station, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near St Michael's and All Angels, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.

The problems fitted cupboards solve

Many flats come with little or no built-in storage. A cupboard in the hallway or a spare recess can change how the home works, because it can reach right up to the ceiling.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Landing shelves for bedding and towels
  • Built-in storage that matches the woodwork
  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags
  • Boxing in a boiler with room for servicing

Kingswood House, about 2.1 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Check stairs, landings and doorways for access
  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Don’t store things against the boiler

Keep the boiler cupboard clear inside, and don’t block the ventilation. When the boiler is serviced, the engineer can open the doors fully to get to it.

Tell us about parking and access during the design visit. Many London streets are in controlled parking zones, and blocks of flats can have rules about lifts and deliveries.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What we need to know

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Examples of the look you are after

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.

  1. It starts with a short note from you.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Getting a quote

It’s useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, use our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
