What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- How big the furniture is
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Getting in touch
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- Where you live, with the postcode
- Approximate measurements of the space
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
Built-in bookshelves for homes in Bell Green
In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them, whichever suits the room. Walls in older houses are rarely flat, so we scribe the edges on site. If you’re living with bowing shelves in an old bookcase and somewhere to keep toys and books tidy, built-in bookshelves made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Some living rooms in London have tall ceilings and cornices, while others have low, plain ceilings. However your room in Bell Green is built, the height is measured as carefully as the width, because it decides how tall built-in bookshelves can go. Sections are sized for the stairs and doors on the way in.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Shelves
Shelves can be fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves add rigidity, while adjustable ones can follow your books.
Plinths and scribe strips
The plinth raises the shelving and hides a sloping floor. Its height can match the skirting board.
Fitting day, step by step
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind, including roughly how many books there are.
- At the design visit, we measure up, check the wall and plan the shelf spans with you. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
- Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, for you to look over.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
- We fit it in your home, fixed securely to the wall.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
Ask for a quote
It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Built-in living-room furniture in Bell Green
About 35% of the homes in the streets around Bell Green went up before 1919, and about 28% between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Bell Green, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. A quarter or more of the homes in the neighbourhood around Bell Green (about 28%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Interwar front rooms normally have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, which shape where built-in bookshelves go.
If you live in a period home close to St Michael's and All Angels, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Fire Station, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

Questions from Bell Green
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bell Green?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Lower Sydenham station?
Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.
How long will the fitting take?
The fitting depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The bookcase is made in our workshop first.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.
What keeps bookshelves from bowing under books?
Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support. Tell us about heavy collections at the design visit.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
It’s made in sections, sized for the route not just the room. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.
Before and after fitting day
People planning built-in bookshelves often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:
- Mention any radiator on the wall
- Ask your electrician about sockets early
- Let us know about access early
- Let us know where the heaviest things will go
On an outside wall, don’t pack books tight against the back so air can move. Watch for any musty smell or marks.
Keep heavy things on low shelves, and never climb the shelves to reach the top.
What prompts built-in bookshelves in Bell Green
New owners of older houses often want shelving that suits the house. The alcoves beside a chimney breast are an obvious home for shelving, and fitted shelves look as though they belong.
Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:
- Shelves that sag under books
- Books piled on the floor
- Bare walls that could hold shelving
- Space for art books and records
Kingswood House, about 2.1 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves.
