How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
  3. You receive a written quote for the storage.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.

How to prepare

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Arranging a design visit

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Under-stairs storage in Southend

In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. That calls for clean lines, well-fitted doors and a finish that suits the rest of the room. We can make plain or panelled fronts, painted to sit with the walls or to stand out. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are storage that doesn’t match the hallway and no room for a small desk or a place to work.

Landings in houses from between the wars are often roomier than in a Victorian terrace, and that space can take shallow fitted storage. Around Southend, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, the landing is worth a look as well as the hall. If a boiler or cylinder sits there, it keeps its clearances and access.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the under-stairs cupboard designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished.

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
  • Note the things that need a home under the stairs
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes

If the hallway is being decorated afterwards, ask your decorator to protect the fronts. Masking tape can lift fresh paint, so it shouldn’t go on the new finish. Should you have a question about the storage, send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll help.

Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. Let them dry before they go away, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Southend

Many people get in touch after digging through clutter to reach a meter or the fuse board. Planned storage can leave a clear path to the meter or fuse board, and the rest of the space can still work hard.

Here’s what under-stairs storage can help with:

  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • A low corner too deep to reach into
  • A fuse board that’s hard to get to
  • A hallway crowded with coats and shoes

Close to Forster Memorial Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked

Flats, leases and landlords

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Questions from Southend

Do you cover homes near Bellingham station?

Yes, homes across Lewisham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Southend?

Yes. Southend is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lewisham and London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

The answer depends on your stairs and what you’ll keep there. Drawers make the low end useful, because you pull the back of the space to you. At the tall end, a cupboard is often better for coats and the vacuum.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Fitted storage in Southend

About 55% of the homes in the streets around Southend went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 18% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Southend include The Fellowship Inn Public House (Grade II), under half a mile north-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 55% of homes in the area around Southend date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Interwar houses typically have a straight flight of stairs with a cupboard below, often holding the meters or the fuse board, which must stay accessible.

The wider area includes historic houses like Kingswood House, about 2.5 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. If your children go to Elfrida Primary School or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.
