Bespoke kitchens in Coombe, Croydon

Planning bespoke kitchens for a home in Coombe? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • An island where space allows
  • Spray-painted or hand-painted cabinets
  • A pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Fixing into concrete takes a heavy-duty drill and makes some noise, so if neighbours are close, a note before fitting day can help. We work within any rules your building has on noise and hours. We tidy as we go.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and how you cook.
  2. We come to measure up and plan the layout with you, including where the sink and appliances will go.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinets, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. We build and finish the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician handle the plumbing, gas and electrics. We do not arrange those trades, so it helps to book them early.

Before we arrive

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Ask for a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote for you to look over. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Bespoke kitchens in Coombe: what you get

A bespoke kitchen is built around the room you have. Every unit is sized from careful measurements taken during the design visit, so there are no filler panels covering awkward gaps. You decide the layout, the storage and the colour with us before anything is made at our workshop. People typically come to us about extra cupboard space and a painted kitchen in a colour you choose, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Homes from the 1950s and 1960s tend to have lower ceilings than older houses, so taking wall cabinets right up is practical. Because many homes around Coombe date from between 1945 and the early 1970s, that’s an easy way to add storage. Moisture-resistant MDF suits a kitchen, and the finish is agreed in your quote.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made cabinets often have chipboard carcasses. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, painted in colours you choose, finished to suit the room. Fixing standalone furniture to concrete or blockwork can be tricky, whereas fitted pieces are designed with fixings that suit the wall. It matters most for tall cupboards and full shelves.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near South Croydon station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

I live in a flat in Coombe. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Kitchens are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

How much time does fitting need?

The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

Do you supply the worktop and appliances?

The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and the cabinets are made to suit them. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Kitchens in Coombe homes

In the area around Coombe, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 43%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 36%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Coombe include Lodge to Combe House (st Margaret's School) (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Coombe House (st Margaret's School) (Grade II), less than half a mile west. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 52% of households around Coombe live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for Croydon as a whole, about 29%, the 2021 Census shows. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Addington Palace, about 1.3 miles east. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. Living in a block of flats near South Croydon station? Then kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For an older house near Church Hall United Reformed Church Of St Paul, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.

How we price bespoke kitchens

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • How big the furniture is
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

What to send when you contact us

These details help when you contact us:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Electrics, sockets and lighting (your electrician)
  • Plastering, tiling or decorating
  • Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Islands where space allows
  • Larders and dressers

Could you do it yourself?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
