Under-stairs storage in World's End
We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes that carry weight, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in World's End and fitted. Typical reasons to get in touch are the low end of the space going to waste and nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Where original shutters, doors or panelling survive, they’re worth designing around. With a large share of the homes around World's End built before 1919, new storage can be made to sit beside them rather than replace them. Door styles can be chosen to suit the age of the house, and painted to match. If your home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original joinery.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Ready-made drawers come in set depths, and the space under a staircase is often deeper than any of them. Bespoke drawers are made to the depth you have, so the back of the space is used too. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

From workshop to your room
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- It starts when you contact us with some details about the space, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
- We visit to measure the space and go through the design with you, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
- A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to read through.
- Your storage is made in our workshop and painted to the colour you chose.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls. Any meters stay easy to reach.
Before we arrive
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Under-stairs storage for homes in World's End
Homes built before 1919 make up about 59% of the housing in the area around World's End, with about 17% built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The centre of World's End is within about a quarter of a mile of the Sloane Stanley Conservation Area. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 24% of households in the area around World's End, based on Census 2021. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.
If you live near William Parnell Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. If your children go to Ashburnham Community School or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

Tips worth knowing
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
- Think about what you will keep in each drawer
- Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
- Note the size of anything tall you want to store
If you chose a hand-painted finish, small marks can be touched in. Keep a little of the paint, or a note of the colour, for later. A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, and small marks often clean off with a damp cloth.
Sharp tools and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Store tools in a box or bag, not loose against the doors. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.
Do you need under-stairs storage in World's End?
Some people simply want somewhere for coats and shoes. A coat and shoe section under the stairs keeps the floor clear and the door easy to open, and the family has an obvious place to put things.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- Needing a compact spot for a laptop
- An old cupboard door that does not suit the hall
- An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
- A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
If you live in a flat close to Imperial Wharf station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What under-stairs storage cannot fix
It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:
- New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
- Altering or cutting into the stairs
- Painting the hallway walls and ceiling

Your questions about under-stairs storage in World's End
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in World's End?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Do you cover homes near Imperial Wharf station?
Yes. We cover all of Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.
Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?
In many homes it’s possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch, and we will see what we can do.
How long will the fitting take?
The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The storage is made at our workshop first, so the time in your home is spent fitting. We know the hall is a busy route, so we keep it as clear as possible.
What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The size of the space, the number of drawers and doors, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.
