Window seats in Hurlingham

FAQs: window seats in Hurlingham

Do you cover homes near Imperial Wharf station?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How do you fit window seats in a flat in Hurlingham?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Window seats are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

What happens during the design visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

How we make window seats for Hurlingham

A window seat can hide a surprising amount of storage. A lift-up lid is simple and gives access to the full depth, while drawers mean you do not have to move a cushion to reach things. At the design visit in Hurlingham, we’ll help you choose. Most enquiries start with a ready-made bench that doesn’t fit the bay and wanting a quiet place to read; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Original features like shutters, cupboard doors and panelling are worth keeping where they survive. Around Hurlingham, where homes from before 1919 make up a large share, fitted storage can be designed to sit alongside them. Panel details can be drawn to suit the house, and painted to match. For a listed home, fixing into original joinery can need consent, so check first.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the window seat we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. The sections are sized for the narrowest point on the route. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit we agree the seat and talk about colour, with a choice of spray painting or hand painting.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the design, materials and finish.
  4. The seat is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is done there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home, and a hand-painted finish is applied in the room.
  6. Give new paintwork gentle use while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Advice

What it is made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for angled panels and radiator grilles. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which is stable and takes paint well. It forms most of the visible parts.

Lift-up lids

With a lift-up lid, the whole space beneath the seat opens up. It suits blankets, toys and things you don’t need every day. We make the lid to open and close cleanly.

When you need someone else

It helps to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Painting the walls of the bay
  • Plumbing work on the radiator under the window
  • Fixing the window itself

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Why bespoke in Hurlingham?

Bespoke seats are scribed to the walls and set level, so there are no gaps at the sides or the base. A bench simply sits in front of the window. In an older room, the difference shows. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Why choose us

What affects the cost of window seats

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How big the furniture is

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Helping us understand the room

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.

Making use of awkward spaces in Hurlingham

In the area around Hurlingham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 55%) and the years since 2000 (about 26%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. 6 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Hurlingham. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. A van working in Hurlingham will typically need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council, which often needs notice. Let us know about parking near your home during the design visit.

If you live near Parsons Green (park), window seats can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. Fulham Palace, about 0.7 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bay or a sash window is a natural place for a window seat.
