Walk-in wardrobes in Hurlingham

Could you do it yourself?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Good light helps you see colours and find things, and any new lights or wiring are for your electrician. We plan the units with your electrician’s work in mind, and agree the details during the design visit. We make walk-in wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are somewhere for shoes to live and a dressing table with drawers and a mirror.

A large share of the homes around Hurlingham were built before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls at the measuring visit.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf wardrobe systems are quicker to get and normally cost less, and in a square room they can work. In an older room with uneven walls and a sloping floor, they leave gaps. A bespoke walk-in wardrobe is made to the room. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Is Hurlingham in the area you cover for walk-in wardrobes?

Yes. Hurlingham is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hammersmith and Fulham and London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details.

Can you fit walk-in wardrobes to the uneven walls of an older house in Hurlingham?

Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.

How much does a walk-in wardrobe cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, fittings and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Do I need doors on a walk-in wardrobe?

That depends on how you like to use the space. Doors, open rails and shelves can all be combined, and we’ll talk it through at the design visit.

How long does fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

Bedrooms in Hurlingham: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hurlingham were built before 1919 (about 55%) and since 2000 (about 26%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Hurlingham, Historic England’s list includes Hurlingham House (Grade II*), under half a mile south, and Parish Church of All Saints (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 55% of homes in the neighbourhood around Hurlingham were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Houses of that age often have a small back bedroom or box room that can become a walk-in wardrobe, with storage scribed to walls that wander.

For a family home near Sulivan Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If you live in a flat close to Imperial Wharf station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. The wider area includes historic houses such as Fulham Palace, about 0.7 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design.

Hurlingham is about 1 mile north-west of Fulham, in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. Anywhere in Hurlingham, it works the same way: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made at our workshop and fitting in your home. We cover places right across Hammersmith and Fulham.

What it is made from

Shelves

Upper shelves are good for cases and seasonal clothes, while daily things stay within reach.

Birch plywood

Shelves that carry piles of clothes need a strong board, and birch plywood suits them.

What happens on fitting day

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the room and how much is fitted into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. We start with the room you have in mind and what needs a home. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. We come to measure the room and go through how the space should work.
  3. You get a quote in writing for the design we’ve agreed.
  4. The units are made in our workshop.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
