Why bespoke in Ivybridge?

Standalone TV units cost less and arrive quickly. It is also easy to replace a stand when your equipment changes. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Why us?

  • Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

TV and media units for homes in Ivybridge

Built-in TV and media units bring the screen, set-top boxes, speakers and cables together in one piece of furniture. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. If you are planning a TV unit in Ivybridge, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about equipment with nowhere proper to go and cables trailing across the wall.

A house from between the wars usually has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, and the proportions of TV and media units are set to match. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Ivybridge, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

Built-in living-room furniture in Ivybridge

In the neighbourhood around Ivybridge, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 42%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 24%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Ivybridge, Historic England’s list includes Church of All Hallows (Grade I), about 0.5 miles south-east, and Mogden House (Grade II), under half a mile north-east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 42% of households in the streets around Ivybridge live in detached or semi-detached houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. A house like that normally has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

For a family home near Chase Bridge Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. The wider area includes historic houses like Richmond House, about 1.1 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Why people ask for TV and media units in Ivybridge

The most common reason is a mess of wires. Leads trail from the TV to the boxes, the sockets and the speakers and nothing off the shelf hides them all. Built-in units give cables somewhere to go.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go
  • A TV that looks out of place in the room
  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • Wasted space around the screen

For a flat near Twickenham station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Can you see real work of theirs?

Questions we are often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Ivybridge?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do you cover homes near Twickenham station?

Yes. We cover all of Hounslow and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can a TV unit hold speakers?

Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, and larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.

How long will the fitting take?

The time on site depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Can the TV unit fit a bigger TV later?

The space can be sized for a larger TV. Tell us the size you might move to at the design visit.

How fitting day works

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure and discuss the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it’s in and is easy to touch up later.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Where other trades come in

Not everything around TV and media units is carpentry, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
