Loft storage for your home in Kennington

Loft storage in Kennington

Our work is in loft rooms that are already converted, or lofts that are boarded. We don’t carry out loft conversions, and Building Regulations apply to a conversion. Once the room is finished, we can design storage to suit it. If you have a converted loft in Kennington, the design visit is the first step. If your home has wasted space behind the knee walls and standard furniture that won’t go up the loft stairs, eaves cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

In a flat without a loft, storage has to be found in the hall, the recesses and the rooms themselves. Around Kennington, where most households live in purpose-built flats, that is worth thinking about early. Shallow cupboards and seats with storage add a lot without taking much floor.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none, which the design allows for.

  1. You get in touch and describe the loft room, its slopes and any dormer.
  2. At the design visit we measure the knee walls and the angle of each slope at more than one point, as they’re rarely even.
  3. Your written quote sets out the storage and the finish.
  4. In our workshop we build each section from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood to follow the slope.
  5. On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to the slope and the knee wall.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Fitted storage in Kennington

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Kennington were built since 2000 (about 32%) and before 1919 (about 26%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 131 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Kennington. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so carrying the sections from the van to the door takes planning.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Mark, under half a mile east of the centre of Kennington, older homes may keep original joinery that eaves cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Vauxhall Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

Kennington is part of the London Borough of Lambeth, about 1 mile south of Stockwell. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Kennington included. Kennington is one of the places in Lambeth where we make loft storage, and the borough has 22 places on our list.

Here we cover the SW8, SW1P and SE11 postcode area for loft storage. Our area takes in homes on streets like Kay Road, Lett Road and Rita Road, for loft storage and any of our other fitted furniture. Kennington sits close to the A203 and A3204. We also cover the places around Kennington: Oval (1 mile north), South Lambeth (1 mile south-west), Little Portugal (1 mile south), North Brixton (1 mile south-east) and Vauxhall (1 mile north). We also make loft storage in nearby places such as Streatham (4 miles south), West Norwood (4 miles south), South Bank (2 miles north), Brixton (2 miles south), Gipsy Hill (4 miles south) and Streatham Hill (3 miles south). As one of the bigger places in Lambeth, Kennington is covered for loft storage and everything else we make.

Green spaces nearby include Battersea Park Lake.

Boards, parts and paint

Doors and drawer fronts

What you see of the storage is mostly its fronts. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. Their tops follow the line of the slope.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on every part of the storage. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. The colour is your choice.

Flats, leases and landlords

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made wardrobes and cupboards are built for standard rooms. Under a slope, it leaves large gaps and wasted space. Bespoke storage follows the angle of the ceiling and fills the knee wall. It costs more than off-the-shelf furniture, and what you gain is the space a standard piece can’t reach. Big standalone units don’t always fit the lift or the turn on the stairs, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. The sections are assembled once inside.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Questions we are often asked

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Kennington?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Will cupboards in the eaves stop air moving?

Not when it’s planned well. We look behind the knee wall at the design visit and plan the storage so air can still move. We do not alter insulation or vents.

Do you carry out loft conversions?

No, we build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded. A conversion is building work, and Building Regulations apply. When the room is finished, we can plan the storage.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Is it possible to fit a wardrobe under the slope?

Yes. Bespoke wardrobes are made to the angle of the ceiling. The tall end takes hanging space, and the low end can hold shelves or drawers. It’s scribed to the slope and walls.

What prompts loft storage in Kennington

Many people get in touch once their loft conversion is complete. The room is there, but the furniture to fit it is not. Fitted storage finishes the room.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Wasted space behind the knee walls
  • An empty dormer that could hold shelves
  • A new loft conversion that needs storage
  • A boarded loft that is hard to keep organised

For an older house near Calvary Church of God in Christ, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards.
