Under-stairs storage for your home in Little Venice

From workshop to your room

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You contact us about the space under your stairs.
  2. At the design visit we measure the underside of the stairs and the floor, then talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage.
  3. We send a written quote for the storage.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Under-stairs storage in Little Venice: what you get

When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. A hanging section, shoe drawers and a shelf for keys keep everything off the floor. With a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, it sits quietly in the hall. It is a small change that makes a busy hallway feel ordered. Most enquiries start with an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and a staircase with untidy space beneath it, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A solid brick outside wall in an older house can be cold and sometimes damp, so a gap and ventilation behind fitted storage help avoid condensation. That matters around Little Venice, where a large share of the homes are that old. Damp should be sorted before anything is fitted against the wall.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Fitted storage in Little Venice

Homes built before 1919 make up about 47% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Little Venice, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Little Venice, Historic England’s list includes Catholic Apostolic Church and Church House (Grade I), less than half a mile north-east, and Church of St Mary Magdalene (Grade I), less than half a mile west. If your own home is listed, internal works that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 47% of homes in the area around Little Venice were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Under the stairs in an older terrace is often where the meters or the fuse board are, so the design keeps them accessible.

Living in a block of flats near London Paddington station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. The wider area includes historic houses such as Winfield House, about 1 mile north-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. If you live near Kensington Gardens, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Tips worth knowing

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Think about how your household uses coats and shoes
  • Clear the space before the design visit if you can
  • Let us know about parking during the design visit
  • Think about what you will keep in each drawer

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the fronts clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The edges of drawers and the areas around handles pick up marks first.

Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. It’s best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Is parking a problem for fitting in Little Venice?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you fit under-stairs storage to the uneven walls of an older house in Little Venice?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

How long will the fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make every part in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

Could the space under my stairs take a desk?

It depends on the height and how open the space is. We look at it at the design visit and tell you honestly whether it will work. If it does, a compact desk with shelving can suit paperwork and a laptop.

Could you do it yourself?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Getting in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it is useful to include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • How you want to use the space

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

How it is made

Doors and drawer fronts

Any access door for a meter can be made to look like the other fronts. It opens fully so the meter stays easy to read. Around it, the other fronts can be drawers, doors or a mix.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting on site lets the storage be finished alongside the woodwork around it. Marks can be touched in without much trouble. Paint needs time to cure fully, so it’s best treated gently at first.
