Under-stairs storage designed for your room
How we make under-stairs storage for Lisson Grove
Each under-stairs cupboard is made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it’s strong and holds screws firmly, and MDF gives the doors and fronts a smooth surface for paint. The finish is sprayed or hand-painted, and then the storage is fitted in your home in Lisson Grove. Typical reasons to get in touch are a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and wanting a quiet corner for paperwork, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Most households around Lisson Grove live in purpose-built flats, and in a flat, the hall, the recesses and the windows are where extra storage normally goes. Each piece is built in sections sized for the route into the flat. Boilers and fuse boards in a hall cupboard keep the access and ventilation they need.
After the design visit, we send you a quote in writing. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
When you need someone else
It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Plastering and decorating around the new storage
- Any work on gas pipes or appliances
- New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Questions from Lisson Grove
Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Lisson Grove?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Lisson Grove?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?
It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.
How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?
How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We make every part in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.
Is the furniture made to order?
Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?
Often, yes, where the space opens onto a room and there is enough height at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. New sockets or lights are for your electrician, and we leave a route for the cables.

How fitting day works
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Where there is no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.
- You let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store.
- We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards.
- We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
- The storage is built in our workshop and painted in your colour.
- The storage is fitted, scribed to the stairs and checked with you. The way to any meters is left clear.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
Getting a quote
To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a quote in writing follows.
Advice
Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Lisson Grove
Sometimes the reason is a meter reading or an engineer’s visit, and the struggle to reach the meter. Planned storage can leave a clear path to the meter or fuse board, and the rest of the space can still work hard.
People usually get in touch with us about things like these:
- A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
- Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
- An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
- Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board

Choosing a carpenter
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
