Paddington Green Under-Stairs Storage

We make under-stairs storage for homes in Paddington Green, designed around the room you have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • Space under the stairs that is hard to use
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out

Under-stairs storage designed for your room

Bespoke under-stairs storage or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf units are made for flat walls and square corners, and the space under a staircase is neither. Boxed units usually leave awkward gaps under the slope and dead space behind. Bespoke storage is designed and cut to the shape of your stairs. It’s a bigger investment than a flat-pack unit, and the return is in the space it uses. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, so storage is lost at the top. Fitted furniture runs to the ceiling.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What you get with us

Under-stairs storage for homes in Paddington Green

Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. Many designs for homes in Paddington Green combine the two. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about needing a compact spot for a laptop and storage that doesn’t match the hallway.

Around Paddington Green, most households live in purpose-built flats, and blocks often have rules on lifts, deliveries and when work can happen. Checking with the managing agent early makes the day smoother. A lease can require consent for fixing to walls, so check yours first.

You get the quote in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

What we don’t do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe engineer

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Paddington Green

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Paddington Green?

Yes. Paddington Green is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Westminster and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Paddington Green affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?

Yes. The design keeps a clear way to the meter or fuse board, typically behind its own door. Meter readers and engineers need access, so we never box them in.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. You choose the colour, and we agree it before the work starts. A spray-painted finish is done in our workshop, and a hand-painted one can be done on site. Either finish can follow a colour already in the hall.

Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors and fronts are MDF, which is stable and paints well, and birch plywood is strong, so it suits drawer boxes and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a block of flats, the stairs, landings, lift and doors matter as much as the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Mansion block lifts can be small, and some blocks have no lift at all, which the design allows for.

  1. It starts with some details from you about the space.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan how you’ll use the space.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
  6. Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Getting a quote

What prompts under-stairs storage in Paddington Green

Some people simply want somewhere for coats and shoes. With a rail, hooks and shoe drawers under the stairs, the hall stays clear, and the family has an obvious place to put things.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • A meter or fuse board buried behind clutter
  • A low corner too deep to reach into
  • Coats and shoes piling up in the hall
  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter

The wider area includes historic houses like Winfield House, about 0.9 miles north-east. If your own home is a period one, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.

What to check before you book

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you contact us.
