Wall beds for your home in Notting Dale

Wall beds for homes in Notting Dale

In a studio flat, a wall bed can make the main room feel much larger. During the day, the room is somewhere to sit, work and eat; at night, the bed comes down. We can build shelves, cupboards or a desk around the bed cabinet, so the whole wall works hard. If your home has a real mattress for visitors and shelves or a desk around the bed, that is what wall beds are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In houses built before 1919, a floor can drop noticeably from one side of a room to the other, and a large share of the homes around Notting Dale are that old. Pieces stand on a levelled plinth or adjustable feet, so the doors line up and the gaps run straight. Where the wall bows, the edge is scribed to follow it.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Questions from Notting Dale

How do you fit wall beds in a flat in Notting Dale?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Shepherds Bush station?

Yes, homes across Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

What does a wall bed cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each wall bed is different, so we price it after measuring. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Will you provide a mattress for the bed?

The mechanism maker sets which mattresses suit the bed by size, depth and weight. We can talk you through what the mechanism allows, so the mattress you choose fits.

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Check your lease if you live in a flat
  • Plan a cupboard for spare bedding
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Check there’s room for the bed to fold down

Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.

Think about the route into the room. Furniture made in a workshop comes in sections sized for stairs, landings and lifts, so it is useful to know about tight turns.

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, a piece at a time. How long fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. The cabinets are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The wall bed is fitted, and any hand painting is done on site. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are

Ask for a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

A wall bed is fixed to the house, so it stays when you move. It is worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before choosing built-in. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, while fitted furniture can follow the room’s own lines.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Notting Dale

About 58% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Notting Dale went up before 1919, and about 15% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Notting Dale include Cosmic House (Grade I), less than half a mile south, and The Electric Cinema (Grade II*), under half a mile east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 58% of homes in the streets around Notting Dale were built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. A wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, and in houses of that age the walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, so the fixings are chosen with care.

If you live in a flat close to Shepherds Bush station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For an older house near Church of St Sava, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Close to Emslie Horniman's Pleasance? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.
