Bespoke kitchens in Redbridge: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 64% of the housing in the streets around Redbridge, with about 17% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Redbridge, Historic England’s list includes Steward's Cottage (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east, and Church of St Andrew (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Terraced houses are home to about 32% of households in the streets around Redbridge, based on Census 2021. Kitchens in London terraces are often narrow, sometimes in a back addition, which suits cabinets made to the exact width.

Close to Valentines Park? A tall cupboard for outdoor things can be part of the kitchen design. Valentines Mansion, about 0.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout.

Redbridge is part of the London Borough of Redbridge, about 2 miles north-west of Woodford. Design visits and fitting in Redbridge can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. Our work takes in places right across the rest of London, from the busiest high streets to quiet residential roads.

How we make bespoke kitchens for Redbridge

A kitchen needs other trades as well as a carpenter. Plumbing is done by your plumber, gas by a Gas Safe engineer and electrics by your electrician, so the design allows for pipes, cables and connections. If you are living with a pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers and making the most of a galley kitchen, kitchens made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.

In a semi or detached house, there may be space for a utility cupboard as well as the kitchen. Around Redbridge, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing. Utility cupboards can be made in the same style and paint colour as the kitchen. Your plumber connects any washing machine or sink.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the kitchen designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Questions we are often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Ilford station?

Yes. We cover the whole of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make bespoke kitchens for homes in Redbridge?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

What does a bespoke kitchen cost?

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, layout and finish all affect the price. For a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

How long does fitting take?

Every kitchen is different. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?

Often the call comes after building work has opened up the space. A new room needs a kitchen planned for its shape and light, and building work itself is for your builder.

Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:

  • A kitchen for a room that isn’t square
  • A kitchen planned around your appliances
  • Making the most of a galley kitchen
  • A painted dresser for the kitchen

Living in a block of flats near Ilford station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?

Tips worth knowing

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Know your appliance sizes early
  • Let us know how parking works on your street
  • Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early
  • Make a note of what you use every day

If a hand-painted door gets a chip, it can be touched in. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that wipes clean. Keep a note of the paint colours.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease early. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

What affects the price in Redbridge

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • How square the room is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Parking near your home
  • The number of doors and drawers

Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

What we need to know

A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To book one, get in touch through our contact form.

What happens on fitting day

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You get in touch and describe the kitchen you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the kitchen and talk about colours and finish.
  3. A written quote follows, with the finish agreed.
  4. We make the kitchen in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which suits kitchens and takes paint well, and birch plywood.
  5. The kitchen is fitted and scribed to the walls, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Plumbing, gas and electrics are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician; new paintwork needs gentle use while it cures.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
