About our TV and media units in Seven Dials
A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That is work for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. Ideally it’s done before the unit goes in so the sockets land in the right place. Typical reasons to get in touch are a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall and boxes with no ventilation, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Victorian and Edwardian houses were built with solid brick outside walls, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. With so many homes around Seven Dials built before 1919, the wall type is checked before any fixing for TV and media units is chosen. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings, particularly behind loaded shelves.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the TV unit we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Living-room carpentry in Seven Dials: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Seven Dials, with about 21% built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. 31 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Seven Dials. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Near central London, streets tend to be narrow and busy, so the route from the van to your door is planned beforehand, especially for larger pieces.
If your children go to St Josephs Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Giles in the Fields, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Some closed off-the-shelf cabinets have little ventilation. Ventilation is designed in where equipment sits, with open backs, gaps or vented doors. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Where other trades come in
Not everything around TV and media units is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Aerial, satellite or broadband installation
- Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
- Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)

Fitting day, step by step
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- You tell us about the room and what the unit needs to hold.
- We come to measure and talk through screen height, speakers and cables.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. If anything in it is unclear, ask us.
- We then make the unit in our workshop.
- We bring it to your home and fit it in place, with the cable routes left clear.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
How to get a quote
To make a start, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.
Advice
Caring for painted furniture
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
- Decide where you’ll sit, so the screen height suits it
- List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
- Let us know about parking and access during the design visit
Vents and equipment shelves gather dust, so a quick clean now and then helps. Clear vents keep equipment cooler.
Leave any new socket or wiring work to your electrician, and don’t overload sockets.
Do you need TV and media units in Seven Dials?
Some want the TV to sit better in a period room. A built-in unit around the chimney breast lets it sit more quietly.
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:
- Nowhere good for speakers
- Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard
- Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
- Standard units leaving gaps
Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.4 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
What to check before you book
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
