Under-stairs storage for your home in Somers Town

Your questions about under-stairs storage in Somers Town

I live near London Euston station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Camden and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Somers Town?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Do photos help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you get in touch through our contact form.

How long will the fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Somers Town

No two staircases are quite the same. The soffit slopes, the stringer sets its own line, and floors are often a little out of level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. That’s something a standard unit can’t do, in Somers Town or anywhere else. People usually come to us about a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out and needing a compact spot for a laptop, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

One flat can have concrete, block and plasterboard walls side by side. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Somers Town, we check each wall at the measuring visit before choosing fixings. On a stud wall, heavier pieces stand on the floor and are tied back.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Making use of awkward spaces in Somers Town

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Somers Town were built before 1919 (about 32%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The centre of Somers Town is within about a quarter of a mile of the King's Cross and St Pancras Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Purpose-built flats are more common around Somers Town than across Camden: about 77% of households, against about 56%, based on Census 2021. That puts the stairs, lifts and doors on the route in at the centre of the plan.

For an older house near St Mary's Church, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them. Close to Lewis Cubitt Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Pancras, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribe strips are trimmed to follow the wall, closing the gap a standard unit would leave. They help the storage look as though it was always there. At floor level, the plinth hides any slope in the floor.

Hand-painted finish

Some people prefer a hand-painted finish for its softer look. It is done on site, in the colour you choose. Touch-ups are simple if the paint is ever knocked.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. Ready-made units leave gaps that need filler pieces. Our storage is scribed to the walls and stairs and set level, so the lines look right. Large ready-made pieces can be hard to get up the stairs or into the lift, while fitted furniture arrives in sections sized for the route. It’s then put together in the room.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.

What happens on fitting day

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it is sized to be manageable. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. The pieces are assembled in the flat.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before we arrive

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Looking after your furniture

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
  • Tell us about parking at the design visit
  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
  • Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit

Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Keep tape, sharp knocks and strong cleaners away from it while it settles.

Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space is not in use. Overfilled drawers put strain on the runners, so it pays to sort them now and then. Wipe up any spills, especially near the floor, before they dry.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
