About our bespoke kitchens in Somers Town

Some kitchens suit a dresser, with cupboards below and open shelves above, and it suits many period homes. Each dresser is made for its wall and finished to match the rest of the kitchen. Most enquiries start with cabinets built around the appliances you choose and a painted kitchen in a colour you choose, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a block, the pipes and risers in a kitchen are normally fixed in place. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Somers Town, cabinets are often designed to work around them. Other trades handle the plumbing and electrics.

A written quote follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Fitting day, step by step

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the room and the kitchen you have in mind is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and plan the cabinets around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose.
  3. A quote in writing follows for the cabinets, materials and finish. Plumbing, gas and electrics are not part of it: those are for your plumber, an engineer on the Gas Safe Register and your electrician.
  4. We build the cabinets, doors and drawer fronts in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home, working around your plumber, your electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

How to get a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Kitchens in Somers Town homes

About 32% of the homes in the area around Somers Town went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Somers Town, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Pancras (Grade I), under half a mile south, and All Saints Greek Orthodox Church (Grade I), about 0.6 miles north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Somers Town. Parking and access are planned during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Handel Hendrix House, about 1.4 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. If you live near Lewis Cubitt Park, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF suits kitchens, as it stays stable and takes paint well.

Spray-painted finish

For a sleek look, spray painting works well, and it is done before fitting.

What bespoke kitchens cannot fix

We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Painting the walls around the kitchen
  • Knocking through or rebuilding walls
  • Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Your questions about bespoke kitchens in Somers Town

Can you make bespoke kitchens for a home in Somers Town?

Yes. Somers Town is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Camden and London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Somers Town?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Can you fit cabinets to walls that are not straight?

Yes, that is part of the job. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so we scribe and level every cabinet.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

It’s made in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route not just the room.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Could you do it yourself?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Do you need bespoke kitchens in Somers Town?

In many older homes, ready-made units struggle with lean and slope. Cabinets end up with gaps or tilted lines, and a bespoke kitchen is scribed and levelled to avoid that.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Tall larder storage
  • A painted dresser for the kitchen
  • Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
  • A kitchen island with room around it

For a flat near London Euston station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Before you choose who makes it

  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Where they’ll park and unload
