Questions from Somers Town

Does a conservation area in or near Somers Town affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Somers Town?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.

What materials do you use?

We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. Your quote sets out the materials.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. Plastering and decorating aren’t part of our work. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

Who chooses the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Is a wall bed safe?

A wall bed is designed to be used regularly as long as they’re fixed and used as the maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and you should follow the maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it.

About our wall beds in Somers Town

Not every mattress suits every wall bed; the mechanism maker sets the size, depth and weight it can take. We can go through what the mechanism allows when we measure, so the mattress you choose fits. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are a hobby room with a bed for guests and hiding the bed when it’s not in use.

Bedrooms in flats often share a wall with the next flat or the communal corridor, and that wall could be solid or plasterboard. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Somers Town, we choose fixings that suit the wall and keep drilling to what’s needed. Tall pieces are fixed back securely.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Keep the floor in front clear before lowering the bed
  • Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
  • Think about where extra bedding will go

The paint needs time to cure fully after fitting. Go easy on the doors and front at first, and wipe the cabinet with a soft cloth only.

Think about who will sleep in the bed and how often. That helps decide its size and the mechanism, and whether a desk or shelves go around it.

Wall beds for homes in Somers Town

About 32% of the homes in the streets around Somers Town went up before 1919, and about 23% between 1945 and 1972, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for wall beds, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Somers Town include Church of St Pancras (Grade I), less than half a mile south, and All Saints Greek Orthodox Church (Grade I), about 0.6 miles north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Fewer homes around Somers Town date from before 1919 than across Camden: about 32%, against about 49%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We check what the walls are made of during the design visit, as they vary with the age of the home.

If you live near Lewis Cubitt Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If you live in a flat close to London Euston station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live in a period home close to St Mary's Church, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where wall beds go.

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it is sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.

  1. First, you tell us about the room and how you’d like it to work.
  2. We visit, measure up and check the wall the bed will fix to.
  3. We send a quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are made at our workshop.
  5. The bed and cabinets are fitted in your home and the mechanism fixed securely. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

We can add shelving around the bed to make use of the whole wall.

Hand-painted finish

Some people like the softer look of a hand-painted finish in a period room.

Bespoke wall beds or ready-made?

You can buy wall bed units off the shelf, often for less, and they can work in a simple space. They’re made in standard sizes, so they may not suit uneven walls, low ceilings or alcoves. Ours is made to the room you have. In a flat, walls are often broken up by radiators, doors and sockets, and standard widths rarely fit between them. Built-in pieces are sized for each stretch of wall.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.
