Under-stairs storage in South Bermondsey

How we make under-stairs storage for South Bermondsey

Each under-stairs cupboard is made in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood suits drawer boxes and carcasses, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and fronts. The finish is sprayed or hand-painted, and then the storage is fitted in your home in South Bermondsey. If you’re living with a fuse board that’s hard to get to and a low corner too deep to reach into, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around South Bermondsey, and many blocks have rules on lift booking, deliveries and working hours. Checking with the managing agent early makes the day smoother. A lease can require consent for fixing to walls, so check yours first.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

Do you need under-stairs storage in South Bermondsey?

With more people working from home, some want a desk tucked under the stairs. Where the space is open to a room, a built-in desk with shelves can fit there neatly. It’s a modest workspace, well suited to a laptop and the household paperwork.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • A fuse board that is hard to get to

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Augustine, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • How parking will work on your street
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Tips worth knowing

People planning under-stairs storage often ask about these. They help whatever the room:

  • Note the size of anything tall you want to store
  • Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
  • Plan decorating around the fitting
  • Make room so the whole space can be measured

Once the fitting is done, the storage is ready to use. Paint needs time to cure fully, so treat the new finish gently at first. Avoid sticky tape, heavy knocks and harsh cleaners while it hardens.

Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Put tools in a case so they don’t knock the paint. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you cover homes near South Bermondsey station?

Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in South Bermondsey?

Yes. South Bermondsey is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Southwark and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?

How long the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make every part in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. It can match the walls, the stairs or the woodwork, so it looks like part of the house.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. It is common to find a meter or fuse board under the stairs, and access has to be kept. At the design visit we measure around them and leave a clear way in. Moving a meter isn’t our work, so we design for where it is now.

How fitting day works

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so tell us about bays, permits or any loading area at the design visit. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. At the design visit we measure the space and plan the storage around the meters, so readers and engineers can still reach them.
  3. A quote in writing follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Preparing the room

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

How to get a quote

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
