Why people ask for wall beds in South Bermondsey

In a studio or a small flat, every bit of floor counts. With the bed away, the main room is a living space again until bedtime.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day

For families living near Ilderton Primary School, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Will the quote be in writing?

How we make wall beds for South Bermondsey

We build the bed housing from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray painted in our workshop or hand painted. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, so the room doesn’t read as a bedroom by day. If your home has a hobby room with a bed for guests and a storage wall with a bed inside, wall beds made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Most households around South Bermondsey live in purpose-built flats, so bedroom space is often tight and every wall counts. Fitted furniture can be planned floor to ceiling, so storage goes up rather than out. The furniture is built in sections that fit the route into the flat, then put together in the room.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it’s sized to be manageable. The stair turns and landings set the limit. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and how often the bed is used. A desk or shelving around the bed can be part of it.
  2. We come to measure, look at the wall and floor, and go through the layout with you.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the storage and the finish.
  4. The bed cabinet and any shelves or desk are made at our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

What affects the cost of wall beds

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • The width and height of the space
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How many doors and drawers there are

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It is useful to include:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Practical tips

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Consider how many people will sleep in it
  • Check mattress size and weight limits
  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall

Check the mattress stays within the limits the mechanism maker sets, because a mattress outside those limits can affect the balance. A new mattress should suit the mechanism too.

Think about the route into the room. Furniture made in a workshop comes in sections sized for stairs, landings and lifts, so it’s useful to know about tight turns.

Questions from South Bermondsey

Is parking a problem for fitting in South Bermondsey?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

I live near South Bermondsey station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Southwark and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

How much room do I need in front of a wall bed?

The bed needs room in front of it to come down, as well as the depth of the cabinet itself. We check the space when we measure, so the design works.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism must be fixed to a sound wall or floor, as its maker specifies, so we check it at the measuring visit.
