Under-stairs storage for homes in Surrey Quays

When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. We can make a coat section with a rail or hooks, shoe drawers and a small shelf for keys and post. Painted in a colour you choose, it reads as part of the house rather than a piece of furniture. For a home in Surrey Quays, it can make the front door feel far calmer. Most enquiries start with a staircase with untidy space beneath it and an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Many homes around Surrey Quays were built since 2000, and in a newer house with a converted loft, the eaves and slopes are worth using. For lofts, the storage goes into spaces that are already converted or boarded. Wherever they go, under-stairs cupboards are fixed to suit the wall.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Why bespoke in Surrey Quays?

Flat-pack furniture is designed to be easy to carry home and quick to assemble. Ours is designed for one staircase and built in our workshop to suit it, using birch plywood for strong drawer boxes and moisture-resistant MDF for painted fronts. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space. Standalone furniture fixed to plasterboard needs the right fixings, and often does not get them. Fitted furniture is planned with fixings into the studs or made for the board.

Rooms that are not square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.

Why us?

  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Newer blocks often have concierge desks, entry systems and rules on lift booking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. You get in touch and describe the stairs and the hall.
  2. We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
  5. We fit the storage in your home, trimming the edges so they meet the stairs neatly. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it’s in.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Advice

Questions from Surrey Quays

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Surrey Quays station?

Yes, homes across Southwark and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

My home in Surrey Quays is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

What affects the price of under-stairs storage?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

That is normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Do pictures help?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

What it costs

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • The internal fittings
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
