St John's Wood Fitted Cupboards

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted cupboards in St John's Wood starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • Storage for coats and shoes in the hallway
  • Landing shelves for bedding and towels
  • Using the full height of a room

Fitted cupboards in St John's Wood

In many London hallways, space is tight, so a cupboard has to earn its place. We can make a shallow cupboard for coats, shoes and bags that still leaves room to pass, with hooks, a rail or shelves inside. A bench with a lift-up lid or drawers under it is another option, so there is somewhere to sit by the door. If your home has a boiler cupboard that keeps access clear and hiding meters and a fuse board neatly, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around St John's Wood, and many blocks have rules on lift booking, deliveries and working hours. It’s useful to check them with the managing agent before fitting day. A lease can require consent for fixing to walls, so check yours first.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How fitting works for fitted cupboards

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on how many cupboards there are and where they go, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it is sized to be manageable. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. The pieces are assembled in the flat.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the space. A rough sketch helps if you have one.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through doors, shelves and rails, with a note of anything that must stay reachable.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. The cupboards are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cupboards in your home and check every door. They’re set level and scribed to the walls as they go in.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards

The price for your room depends on:

  • The internal fittings
  • How big the furniture is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

What to send when you get in touch

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a written quote follows.

Fitted storage in St John's Wood

About 30% of the homes in the area around St John's Wood went up before 1919, and about 29% between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of St John's Wood, 14 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.

If you live in a flat close to South Hampstead station, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Winfield House, about 0.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves. If you live near Primrose Hill, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and fitted cupboards can give those things a place.

Your questions about fitted cupboards in St John's Wood

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted cupboards fitted in St John's Wood?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you cover homes near South Hampstead station?

Yes. We cover all of Westminster and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Will a fitted cupboard work on a sloping floor?

Yes, that’s part of the job. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cupboard is scribed and levelled.

Why bespoke in St John's Wood?

Boiler and meter cupboards are hard to get right with standard units. Clearances, ventilation and access all matter, and a cupboard made for the spot can allow for them. Standard furniture sizes rarely suit the shape of a flat, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Fitted furniture is planned around those.

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Flats, leases and landlords

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
