Questions from Stockwell
My home in Stockwell is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Does a conservation area in or near Stockwell affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.
How long is the fitting for a home office?
The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We make the desk and storage in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?
In many homes, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. It’s scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. We’ll check the size at the design visit.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Fitted home offices in Stockwell: what you get
Planning the cables early is what keeps a home office tidy. We design routes through the desk and units for chargers, screens and printers. If you need new sockets, they’re for your electrician, and we plan the furniture around them. We look at the sockets when we visit in Stockwell. Most enquiries start with a room with two jobs to do and files and folders piling up, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
If you take video calls, the shelves behind your desk are on show, so a mix of closed cupboards and open shelves keeps the view tidy. With most households around Stockwell in purpose-built flats, the office often shares a room. A desk behind doors puts work away at the end of the day.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Fitted home offices in Stockwell: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 36% of the housing in the area around Stockwell, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of Stockwell is within about a quarter of a mile of the Stockwell Green Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Stockwell. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.
If you live in a period home close to St. Andrew's, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. If you live near Max Roach Park, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.
Stockwell is in the London Borough of Lambeth. From period terraces to newer flats in Stockwell, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. We list Stockwell among 22 places we cover in Lambeth.
We make fitted home offices across the SW9, SW4 and SW8 postcode area. Whether you live on a street such as Kay Road, West Road and Cato Road or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for fitted home offices. Stockwell is near the A203 and A2217, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you get in touch. We also cover the places around Stockwell: Little Portugal (1 mile north), Angell Town (1 mile east), North Brixton (1 mile north-east), South Lambeth (1 mile north) and Clapham (1 mile west). Across the rest of Lambeth, our area takes in Streatham (3 miles south), West Norwood (3 miles south), South Bank (3 miles north), Waterloo (2 miles north), Vauxhall (2 miles north) and Lambeth (2 miles north). As one of the bigger places in Lambeth, Stockwell is covered for all of our fitted furniture.
Landmarks near Stockwell
Around Stockwell, we cover homes near Lansdowne School, The Marquess Of Lorne Public House and Durand Academy, among other places. For rail, the closest station is Brixton station, about 0.5 miles south-east of the centre. Nearby you’ll also find St Giles' Hospital (1.7 miles east). Green spaces nearby include Battersea Park Lake.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
If you only need a simple desk against a straight wall, an off-the-shelf desk may be enough. Bespoke work makes sense in an alcove, under a slope, or where you want the desk, shelves and storage to work together. At the design visit, we will tell you honestly which approach suits your room. Standard furniture does not allow for boxed-in pipes, risers or meter cupboards, so it ends up with gaps or blocks access. Built-in pieces are designed around them, with access kept.
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What prompts fitted home offices in Stockwell
Cables and chargers are a common frustration. Planned routes through the desk keep cables out of sight. Any new sockets are for your electrician, and we design around them.
Requests we hear often include:
- A screen that is hard to read by the window
- Flimsy shelves that will not take the weight
- No way to put work away
- Cables trailing across the desk and floor
Carlyle's House, about 2.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk.
Choosing a carpenter
- Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- How parking will work on your street
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
Flats, leases and landlords
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
What we don’t do
We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out
- Turning an unconverted loft into a room
- Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator

Fitting day, step by step
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Sections come into the flat in the order they’re fitted, so the flat doesn’t fill up. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.
- It starts with a short note from you about the space.
- At the design visit we plan the office and measure the route in: stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways. It’s useful to tell us about parking, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
- We send a written quote.
- We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The sections are brought in, joined and scribed to the walls, ready for work.
Before fitting day
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Getting a quote
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.
