Why bespoke in Stockwell?

If you may move soon, a standalone bed you can take with you could suit you better. It’s worth thinking about how long you plan to stay before you decide. Standalone furniture takes up floor without using the height of the room. Fitted furniture can go to the ceiling and fill a recess exactly, leaving more floor clear.

There’s no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

About our wall beds in Stockwell

Not every mattress suits every wall bed, because the mechanism maker sets limits on size, depth and weight. We’ll talk through what suits the bed during the design visit, so the mattress you choose fits. If your home has a proper bed instead of a sofa bed and a bed that fills a little-used room, that is what wall beds are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

When floor space is tight, the space over the door and above the bed head is often wasted. Since most households around Stockwell live in purpose-built flats, fitted furniture that bridges those spaces is worth considering. Top cupboards suit things you need only now and then, like spare bedding or suitcases.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, taken from what we agreed at the visit.

Pricing wall beds in Stockwell

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Getting in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Any ideas or images you have saved
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Fitting day, step by step

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so tell us about bays, permits or any loading area during the design visit. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and the wall where the bed could go.
  2. At the design visit we check what the wall is made of, as a wall bed has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies.
  3. A quote in writing follows, covering the cabinet, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the cabinet in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the cabinet in your home and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.
  6. Before we leave we show you how to lower and lift the bed.

Before fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand

Advice

Wall beds for homes in Stockwell

About 36% of the homes in the area around Stockwell went up before 1919, and about 24% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 132 entries within half a mile of the centre of Stockwell. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and wall beds can be designed to work around them. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Lambeth is inside it. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Stockwell, as it does anywhere else in London. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.

For a flat near Brixton station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Stockwell Green United Reformed Church, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near St. Andrew's, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Questions from Stockwell

Do you cover homes near Brixton station?

Yes, homes across Lambeth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Stockwell?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

How much does a wall bed cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The bed size, the cabinet and any storage around it all make a difference. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?

Yes. We often design the bed as part of a wider storage wall, so the whole wall is useful. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.
