Kitchens in Stockwell: local notes

Homes built before 1919 make up about 36% of the housing in the streets around Stockwell, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how kitchens are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Stockwell include Stockwell Green United Reformed Church (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east, and The New Queen's Head Inn (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling can need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Lambeth included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Stockwell. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

For a family home near St Andrew's Church of England Primary School, planning a kitchen around family routines, with a place for school things, pays off. For a flat near Brixton station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

How we make bespoke kitchens for Stockwell

We make kitchens to fit the room, not a catalogue of set sizes. Each cabinet is made to the real measurements of your walls, floor and ceiling, so there are no filler panels covering tricky gaps. You decide the layout, the storage and the colour with us, and the kitchen is made at our workshop before it is fitted. We make kitchens from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a painted dresser for the kitchen and a kitchen that fits an uneven room.

Pipes, risers and meter cupboards in a flat kitchen cannot typically be moved. With purpose-built flats home to most households around Stockwell, cabinets are often designed to work around them, keeping access where it’s needed. Other trades handle the plumbing and electrics.

We write quotes in plain English. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished.

Is bespoke worth it?

There is a place for both. In a simple modern kitchen, off-the-shelf can be enough. For period homes, tricky rooms or a painted look, bespoke tends to earn its place. In a flat, walls are often broken up by radiators, doors and sockets, and standard widths rarely fit between them. Fitted furniture is made for the spaces that are left.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose.

Why choose us

  • Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Scribed to uneven walls

How we price bespoke kitchens

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

We don’t publish set prices, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote. To start, fill in our short enquiry form.

Getting in touch

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll normally ask about:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

For a quote for bespoke kitchens in Stockwell, tell us about the room on our contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea, with sizes if you have them. Next comes a design visit, followed by a written quote.

Practical tips

The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:

  • Treat new paintwork gently at first
  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
  • Have damp sorted before fitting
  • Line up your plumber, electrician and Gas Safe registered engineer early

Follow the appliance makers’ guidance for your oven, hob and dishwasher, and the care advice for your worktop.

Line up your other trades in good time. The pipes, cables and gas supply need to suit the layout, so it helps if everyone knows the plan.

Common questions about bespoke kitchens

I live in a flat in Stockwell. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

I live near Brixton station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Lambeth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Which worktops and appliances can I have?

You choose the worktop, sink and appliances, and the cabinets are made to suit them. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

What happens at the design visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

Should I send pictures?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.

  1. You contact us about a bespoke kitchen.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the layout and the finish, spray-painted or hand-painted.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. The cabinets are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, and a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. The kitchen is fitted and scribed to the walls, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Treat new paint gently while it cures; the plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your own plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.

How to prepare

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Related advice

Is it time for bespoke kitchens?

Many people come to us because a standard kitchen doesn’t suit their room. Off-the-shelf cabinets come in set widths, and the gaps get filled with panels. Bespoke cabinets are built to the real sizes from the start.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • Spaces sized for your oven and fridge
  • A pantry cupboard with shelves and drawers
  • A kitchen that fits an uneven room
  • A dresser that suits a period house

Carlyle's House, about 2.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top.
